Soccer Shooting

Take the shot!

Shooting and scoring are a very important part of the game of soccer.  Consequently, it is important that a strong player have good command of shooting techniques.  Goals are scored under many different circumstances and in a variety of ways.  It is possible to advance the ball and score with all parts of the body with the exception of the arms and hands; however, the most important shooting skill for a player to develop is the instep drive.  The instep drive is the most effective kick in soccer because it gives the greatest power and the most distance.

The reason for this is that the approach, the swing of the kicking foot, and the follow-through movement all point in the direction of the kick.  Because of the great distance and power generated by this kick, it is used all over the field, especially for defensive clears.  The difference between this kick being an offensive or a defensive weapon is the lean of the body.  By leaning the chest over the ball, the flight of the ball will be keep low to the ground, making it a more effective shot for scoring goals.  By leaning back when contact is made on the ball, the ball will rise quickly and will travel a greater distance, making it effective as a defensive clear.

Some of the other types of kicks used frequently for shooting are the full volley, half volley, side volley and also shot that curve in and out.

Shooting Myths:

Myth: You must be born a shooter.  You’ve either got it or you don’t.

Truth: We all have natural talent.  For some, success in certain areas comes easier.  A famous art teacher said, “Talent is a gift, but dedication is costly.”  The great performers all work hard to develop their talents.  You can become a great shooter, it’s your choice.

Myth:  Practice is the key to getting better.

Truth:  Yes, practice will help you get better, but practicing incorrectly will not help you improve for the long term.  Practicing the proper technique and going game speed are critical elements to improvement.

Myth:  Having great shooting form will make you a great shooter.

Truth:  Again, it’s only partially true.  The mental approach is perhaps even more important than the physical approach.  You have to have an intense desire to score goals.  You need the confidence to the keep taking good shots.  Proper form is important, but to be your best, you must believe you’re a great shooter.
