Advice for Parents on Helping Children Achieve Basketball Excellence

Nbc basketball camps advice

Do you have a son or daughter who aspires to be great at basketball. Here are five important pieces of advice to consider.

In basketball, the fundamentals and the basketball mechanics are skills such as shooting, ball handling, techniques of passing, defensive body movement, blocking out, and individual offensive moves. The goal is for the body to immediately perform these skills easily, perfectly, flawlessly under any condition. This requires accurate repetition. The mind focused on mastering the basketball must be devoted to this task until it becomes automated, then the mind can be ready for the higher level reasoning and problem solving needed.

The second recommended area of focus for younger athletes is improving basketball IQ such as the ability to see the court well, the understanding of spacing and off-ball movement, good decision making when passing, wise shot selection, and so forth. Basketball IQ is built over time through many touches and experiences with the ball. Five on five is one of the slowest ways to build basketball IQ according to camp directors. The curriculum and instructional philosophy of the camps and programs you have your children participate in should give each athlete maximum time with the ball.

Camp directors’ third recommendation is for parents to work with their sons or daughters to establish a strength, quickness and vertical training program. Physical strength, quickness and jumping ability require intentional training and outside mentoring.

The fourth recommendation is for parents to find environments and coaches who build courage and love for the game. Harsh environments can strip confidence and leave athletes wanting to quit playing. Find camps, coaches, programs and teams which will help your son or daughter become the athlete he or she can be. As the great basketball coach John Wooden said, “A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment.”

As you help walk your son or daughter through the pathway of competitive basketball, find mentors and resources you can use to guide you through.
