Parenting Dreamers

Nbc basketball camps advice for high school players

"Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning."

If you have children who love basketball, your parenting affects their dreams. The word dream comes from the 1300s and in the Old English had no connection with sleep but with music. A dreamer was a musician in the olden days, and used lengthy time to imagine or create music. Today, every great creative achievement requires dreaming and imagination. Dreams either while sleeping or awake can be the gateway into transformation. Walt Disney, the quintessential dreamer, said where others saw a strawberry field, he saw Disneyland.

Parents who live in the uber rational need to be very careful because they can eliminate creativity in their kids. Daydreaming not only helps solidify long-term learning and memory but it is the birthplace of creativity. Engineering, math, medicine, science and other “rational” fields must embrace literature, poetry and other more creative and imaginative disciplines in order to be wise.

The best gift you can give your children is to be someone who dreams great dreams. Great dreaming requires hope and the will to follow through. When we stop dreaming, we lose heart. Give your children the gift of an example of a parent worthy of imitation. Take time to dream about parenting, loving what you do, and about what you can give to the world.
