Basketball Skill Development—NBC’s top 5 keys to consider

John Wooden, considered one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, placed skill development at the center of his success plan because he felt it was the foundation for becoming great. At NBC Basketball Camps we believe skill development is crucial to your development as a player. Unfortunately, the majority of athletes in junior high and high school and their parents tend to overrate their skills. This could be a product of misunderstanding confidence. Consequently, many students are under skilled. One common complaint we encounter from college coaches are the lack of fundamentals and serious skill development of their incoming students.

We want to help you navigate the basketball landscape. It’s hard if you haven’t achieved success at the high levels to know what path to take. Parents are under pressure to try and get their son or daughter on a top traveling team paying big bucks to travel around the country and compete. Here are some key points to consider this summer.

Key Points for Basketball Skill Development:

  1. It would be ideal for you to play point as much as possible or best yet, play for teams which run five man motion. This means no one is labeled a position and you can get experience at all five positions on the court. Unless you are going to be huge, you aren’t going to play post in college. Even if you are big, how much more valuable will you be if you have point guard ball handling skills and 2 guard shooting skills?
  2. Stop comparing. First, everyone develops differently. We’ve seen amazing 12 year olds who think they are all that and a bag of chips who do not go on to play high school basketball. We’ve seen 12 year olds who can’t catch who end up playing Division 1. Build your skills. Parents, don’t judge. If you tell your kid he or she is the best player, this can be dangerous. It may not be what he or she needs to hear. Confidence isn’t about who is best, it is about finding the passion and discipline to become YOUR best. If your kid loves basketball and it looks hopeless for him or her, refrain from judgment, encourage his or her hard work. Remember the story of the Tortoise and the Hare-- it has something to tell us as parents.
  3. Train your mind away from the “Game Only” mindset. If you are playing games and practicing on a travel team all summer, we guarantee you are making a mistake. Call us and let us talk to you about it. It’s not the best way to build skill and talent. Period.
  4. You do what you know. Parents, look at your level of success. If you never achieved the level you really wanted to—make sure you find a mentor with someone who has. Work to correct the patterns which blind us from experiencing success.
  5. Eliminate blame. Remove any doubt it is the coach or the external circumstances preventing you from your success. Make your game so good, coaches have to play you. It is important to find coaches who can help you make your game better.
