Basketball Stewardship

Basketball stewardship

One of the best basketball teams in Montana history had a stewardship mindset with their program. The high school players invested in the training and development of the 3-5th grade teams. These high school students taught the offensive building blocks of their own press break, plays and secrets of getting open to these grade schoolers. The middle school had coaches who were fully invested in the high school program and implemented the team’s “run and gun” system, expectations, fitness level and offensive/defensive sets. Each coach and program met together to build toward the high school years. This collaboration was part of the stewardship mindset of the staff to help create skilled teams for years to come. This program became a dynasty in the state and those who were coached by the high school state champions in grade school, went on to win their own championship.

Basketball stewardship is a mindset which gives you the imagination to look into the future to picture what can be. Just as a farmer is a steward of the land, a basketball player is the steward of his or her team. Like a farmer, a great player is mindful of the principle that what you sow every day, you reap.

The Stewardship Mindset

Getting to play on a team with other people is a gift and a blessing. Many people fail to be thankful for this amazing opportunity, but nonetheless, it is still a gift. Playing together provides you with the opportunity to navigate difficulties, personalities, and challenges together; challenges to our ego, our courage and our self-discipline. Without this experience, we may miss discovering how we measure up in times of difficulty. It’s easy to be a great person and leader when life is easy but the true test happens when life gets tough. Being on team is a big responsibility and that is where stewardship comes in. If everyone on the team is only looking out for number one, the team is the last place on earth anyone would want to be. But if your team has a stewardship mindset, what an incredible place to experience life together.
