Consistent on the Basketball Court

Stats are a barometer of your basketball health. They reveal consistency and what we need to know about our game and our skill level. They are unbiased. If you want to play at the highest level, they are your tools to know where you are at and where you need to be. Stats show what you know.

What can you consistently do day in and day out on the court?
What stats do you need to measure?

Athleticism stats:
Vertical jump
Take your standing reach and then measure the height of your leap. Consistent workout for vertical typically sees major results in 18 months.

Speed/Reaction time
The 40 yard dash is one of the most standard testing for speed.
Defensive slide in the key for one minute.
T test 50 100 50 for quick transitions forward, side and backward movement.
Ruler drop test or other fast hand reaction tests are good for eye hand coordination.

Strength/Endurance
Suicide runs measures anaerobic ability, quick transition, and endurance.
Push up and burpees are good indicators of strength and endurance.
Weight room testing based on age should be measured by coaches especially squats and bench press.

Shooting
Game shots, at game spots, at game speed. There must be some element of pressure added to your shooting workout to simulate the same unconscious game pressure. This could be a quick suicide run after 2 or 3 misses in a row. This elevates the tension and the practice outcome.

Passing, Dribbling, Ball handling
You can easily find so many great drills from camp or online that you can use to measure your skills in these areas. Rotate the drills and document your speed or accuracy depending on the drill.

If you struggle with being consistent in your basketball practice, school, or life, you must spend more serious time determining why you are not following through. The more help you need to follow through, the more outside structure, coaching, mentoring you need and the more likely you will be to resist, dislike and want to quit this system. This is also where you can fall into danger because our weakest areas attract us to the weakest systems. Health attracts health. Shame is the quickest but the most damaging tool to bring about change. Find mentors and coaches who do not use shame to motivate.

Find a plan to move through pain. Most of us are pain averse so we want to quit when something is remotely painful. Growth includes discomfort. Know what is too much and what is the right amount of pain during this process of change.
