How to develop a feel for basketball

NBC Basketball Camps

At NBC Basketball Camps we value making sure our campers understand how to develop a feel for the game. Nothing can replace the "feel" a talented player has for the game. This feel is what some people call rhythm or court awareness, others call it the will to win or the ability to see things before they come to be. There are many ways to develop a good feel for the game, here are a few:

1. Watch skillful players who have a great feel, watch them a lot, watch them in high detail, watch every movement, every move on offense, defense, rebounding, and hustle.

2. If you don’t know where to find players who have great court awareness, ask other talented players or coaches you respect, and they’ll help you point out the players with a great feel for the game, from the NBA and WNBA all the way to the level you’re at now.

3. Find some of those players with a great feel for the game who are nearby, and ask them questions, ask them a ton of questions, and find out the answers, and go work on those answers in your own game until you too have a great feel.

The quest for greatness comes to completion in the way we seek wisdom as basketball players from those who have greater wisdom than us, and especially in the way we apply that wisdom to our own game.
