The Power of Insight to Become a Better Person

"The best vision is insight. Malcolm Forbes"

Insight is required to become a great basketball player, student, coach, parent, and leader. Insight is the foundation for growth and achievement. You must have the knowledge and wisdom to make changes in your game to become a complete player. Insight helps you to know what makes a great leader and what you need to do to become a great leader. Insight is not a gift given to a few. Insight is a skill and a discipline that requires tenacity and courage to develop.

What is Insight

Insight was first used around 1580 and means "penetrating understanding into character or hidden nature." It means mental vision. Insight is the application of knowledge and wisdom to help you create legitimate change. Great athletes can see the steps they need to take to achieve the goals they have set.

What Blocks Insight

1. Scarcity. Scarcity is a "never enough" mindset-- not talented enough, not smart enough, not enough playing time. When we live in scarcity, we become anxious. Anxiety can lead to procrastination, depression, and under-functioning. A scarcity mindset believes, "If I can't be the best I'm not going to try." Scarcity is born in comparison and robs us of the work and the joy we need to embrace to be the best WE can be.

2. Shame. Shame blocks our ability to be teachable and courageous. We feel shame when our self-confidence is frail and too connected with what we do and with how people think about us. Shame is extremely dangerous for a player. If your self-confidence is tied to the difficulties of your game and what your team or coaches think about you, you won't be able to take risks or be open to correction. A player hampered by shame is a player whose self-confidence will be easily taken away.

3. Arrogance: One of the biggest blocks to insight is thinking you are better than you are. An athlete who is arrogant in any aspect of their game will not achieve greatness. Serious players are always pushing, reaching, learning, questioning, and striving to become better.
