One of the biggest parenting challenges and what to do about it

Building strong basketball teams is the job of a significant coach.

One of the greatest parenting challenges happens when you and those who help you parent are out-of-sync. Energy is limited and when we as parents must waste energy in conflict management and fighting for agendas, our kids get less of our quality energy. Instead, spend energy creating cooperation with those who help you raise your child. Set common goals, use the resources and strengths of the team, and encourage each other.

Example: When NBC Founder Fred Crowell and his wife found out they were having a daughter, they sat down and envisioned the character qualities they wanted their daughter to have when she turned 21 years old. They wrote these qualities down and created a plan to help work on ways to build these qualities. Each week, they would have time to review goals and encourage each other. They made a commitment not to criticize the other for any shortcomings and instead to focus on what they can do. Instead of telling the other person how to improve, Fred would ask Susie for ways he could improve, and she asked him for ways she could improve. This elimination of criticism and lack of defensiveness helped them reach their goals. Your child will benefit from this cooperation.
