Three ways to elevate your success on the basketball court

Success tip

5 key questions every serious basketball player must honestly answer in order to become a great player

SUCCESS ON THE THE HARDWOOD

John Wooden defined success as "the peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” Here are three ways to elevate your success on the basketball court.

  1. Eliminate the desire to compare yourself to other people. You will ALWAYS find someone better than you. You will always find someone not as good as you. Discipline yourself to look at your skills and abilities. How far can you take your skills? What are your strengths? What are your areas of improvement? Do you have a written plan in place to improve?
  2. Practice. The reason people excel at on the court is because they have sacrificed to be great. They have the ability to be their best when their best is needed because they have worked hour after hour to be their best. It's just another day's work. You can't expect to rise to be your best if you haven't done so every day. How committed are you to making every practice your best? How disciplined are you to make every time you step on the court your best effort?
  3. Increase your pressure. When you have a shooting work-out, put consequences on the line. Owe yourself a sweet sixteen if you miss. The more you practice the intensity of the moment, the better you will be when your moment actually arrives.
  4. Self-check
  • Rate your current level of success on the court.
  • How do you define success for yourself?
  • How much do you compare yourself?
  • Rate your discipline on a daily basis.
  • How often do you put a consequence on the line when practicing?
