The best way to close the gap is developing creative tension.

Creative tension is the crucible that requires us to face the gap between our dreams and our present reality. Tension is a word that often is perceived as negative, but tension is an important word for athletics and life. Take time to expand your mind as we focus on this powerful training and use it as a launch into a stronger basketball future.

What is tension?
The word tension can be immediately labeled negatively. But tension is a crucial part of growth. Tension comes from the word, “to stretch.” Stretching requires wisdom and discernment. Too much tension is damaging, and too little will not make you stronger and more flexible.

CREATIVE TENSION

Creative tension was recently coined by social engineer, Peter Senge, measuring the powerful tension between our goals and our present reality. This interim space he named, “Creative Tension.” He believed people should begin to differentiate between creative tension and emotional tension. Can you explain the difference? It is the imagination to understand creative tension as the energy required to close the gap between dreams and reality.

A good image to hold in your mind when thinking about creative tension is a rubber band. Picture the rubber band closing the gap between your dreams and reality. A slack rubber band has no power, no energy, and no ability to move two objects closer together. A rubber band that is too strained will break. Creative tension is the steady intensity needed to close the gap between where you are right now and where you would like to be.

Self-Check on Creative Tension:

  • Do you label the tension you feel between your dreams and current reality as positive or negative?
  • Do unfulfilled goals inspire you to creatively solve problems, or do they discourage you and cause you to want to quit?
  • Where do you experience creative tension drawing you closer to your goals?
  • Where do you experience emotional tension paralyzing or discouraging you in reaching your goals?
  • How do hope and optimism inform your creative tension?
  • How does discouragement and despair inform your negative tension?
  • What can you learn from this analysis?

DYNAMIC TENSION
Dynamic tension is an aspect of creative tension and is a person’s ability to lean into the tension necessary for growth. It is the self-disciplined patience to stay in the unresolved spaces that stretch between two moving objectives.

For example, the tension of work and home, or the tension of serious athletics and serious academics. There are countless examples of dynamic tension, and the discernment needed to live within these spheres. It is easy to snap the tension and move into one space or another.

For example, the tension of eating healthy and celebrating the wonder of life. Many snap in one of the extremes. Never eating dessert or always eating dessert. Dynamic tension is the ability to eat healthy and enjoy dessert.

Closing the gap between your dreams and goals begins with creative tension and the will to imagine the steps necessary to close the gap. It is the right dynamic tension of wanting with all your heart but not being obsessed. It means identifying the practical steps needed to march toward your future. Most people avoid creative tension and just hope things work out.

Do the work to say in the creative tension.
