Must-answer questions for serious basketball athletes
Most people don't use the right tools to assess basketball talent. Because of this many parents and students don't really know how to accurately tell if they are a serious and talented player.
One of the biggest obstacles to quality basketball is the desire for many athletes to be better than they are. Where does this come from? What causes a desire to be better than the stats, coaches’ evaluation, or skill set reflect?
Perhaps it is because many of us don’t recognize the threshold of work needed to be at this elite level.
Must-answer questions for serious athletes
- What drives skill?
- What drives talent and ability?
- What drives basketball success?
A better tool for parents and campers to use to determine basketball talent is to objectively evaluate their student athlete’s level of grit and perseverance. Perseverance is a better indicator of future basketball success than raw talent but talent does matter. Rate your natural physical talent and ability. How tall are you, strong, fast-- what is your eye hand coordination? Those who are naturally gifted in these areas have an advantage. Those who don't must work harder to close the gap.
Be honest with the basketball assessment.
•How gritty are you on the court—giving it your all; 100 percent?
•Does your game fluctuate between hot and cold? How consistent are you?
• How many hours do you practice and does your practice move the needle with accurate kept stats on your ability as a player?
•How motivated are you working out on your own—written game plan, keeping stats, pushing yourself, charting improvement.
•Rate your endurance. Your endurance in sports and school is a strong indicator of your ability to persevere.
•Rate your ability to work through discomfort and even pain. Can you recognize when to stop and when to push?
Basketball is an amazing sport. It is a high skill, and a heavy time concentration sport which requires years to develop.
One of the reasons NBC Camps puts a premium on Intensity Night for our overnight camps is because we aim to honor the work needed for excellence. Most parents want the All-Star game, but it is the work each student-athlete intentionally puts into each station with maximum effort that reveals a more truthful view of a person’s future basketball success.
There is a direct correlation between perseverance and high achievement in sports. Until this gets revered and valued by athletes and parents, people will be posing as players and wishing for greatness.
Be the player who puts in the work.
