Winning the Volleyball Weekend as a Parent: Tips to Keep Your Sanity

by Cassidy Clark

Ah, the weekend volleyball tournament: where time has no meaning, sleep is a myth, and the gym echoes with a symphony of whistles, squeaky shoes, and teenagers cheering. As a dedicated volleyball parent, you’re there to support your athlete, but let’s face it, you need some support too. Here’s a handy guide to surviving (and maybe even thriving) through the volleyball weekend madness.

Caffeine, Caffeine, and More Caffeine

The early bird may get the worm, but you’re just trying to get to the first serve on time. Make caffeine your MVP this weekend. A pre-tournament coffee is a must, but don’t forget a large thermos to keep you going as the hours tick by. Hot or iced, coffee or tea—your caffeine delivery system is your lifeline here. You’ll need it to survive the unpredictability of the tournament schedule and maintain the enthusiasm to cheer through every game (yes, even the ones at 7 AM).

Bring Earplugs (No, Seriously)

Picture this: the deafening shrill of whistles, the relentless “Mine! Mine! Mine!” calls, and that one parent who’s giving a play-by-play louder than the coach. Protect your ears and your peace by slipping in some earplugs to take the edge off. You’ll still hear the key moments, but with less jarring intensity.

Pack Your Seat—The Comfiest One You Can Find

Forget bleacher benches. Volleyball weekends are won by those who bring their own portable, comfy, back-supporting throne. Invest in yourself with a foldable stadium seat or even a plush camping chair—gym permitting—if you’re in it for the long haul.

This is a marathon, not a sprint, and you’ll want a chair that lets you cheer, relax, and occasionally dose off without feeling like you’ve been doing wall sits for three hours.

Master the Art of “Active Watching”

Everyone loves an enthusiastic parent, but this isn’t the NBA playoffs. Avoid the sideline coaching and leave that to the professionals (the actual coaches). Instead, try some “active watching.” Nod thoughtfully, clap in all the right moments, and save the pep talks for after the game. This will not only save your voice but also help you avoid any awkward side-eyes from other parents who came for volleyball, not a one-man pep rally.

Remember: It’s About Fun, Not Just the Win

Finally, take a moment to enjoy the experience, even if it’s chaotic. Your support is what your athlete will remember—long after the weekend ends and the score fades from memory. Celebrate every point and every moment, even the messy, loud, “how is it only 2 PM?” moments.

So parents, arm yourselves with caffeine, cozy seats, and a touch of humor. With these essentials, you’ll be ready to survive—and even enjoy—the volleyball weekend.
